UNHCR: Chad fears ‘very real’ prospect of more Sudanese refugee arrivals, needs support

PIL DOCRINE:IN LOCO PARENTIS (In the place of a parent):Refers to the legal responsibility of a state or institution to act in the best interests of individuals under its care or authority, particularly relevant in cases involving minors or vulnerable groups.

The UN refugee agency is concerned about a potential increase in refugees from Darfur to Chad due to a lack of food and essentials. Chad urgently needs more humanitarian aid and development investment to stabilize its fragile socio-economic environment and continue its open-door stance towards refugees. The situation could become worse soon without concerted efforts to provide more assistance to Chad, which currently hosts 1.1 million refugees.

Over 160,000 refugees await relocation, but funding is scarce. Shelters cost millions, and UNHCR's 2024 funding need is $319.5 million, with only 4% met so far. Chad's program for displaced persons faces persistent funding challenges.
